- I've posted several extra credit opportunities on the Blackboard course shell. They can be found under the Course Information tab in the Extra Credit Opportunities section. Making comments on blogs and answering questions on the Cyberspace Cafe are some of these options. Please read the details in this folder for more specific information on extra credit opportunities including due dates.
- Please note that assignments are due the following Monday they are released EXCEPT for the last week of class because the last day of class falls on a Friday.
- As you will notice, I have released all of the weekly material for the entire summer session all at once. The only exception to this are the weekly quizzes. Due to some unfortunate incidents with cheating the last few semesters, I will not be releasing quizzes for each week until the weekend they are due. Furthermore, correct answers and feedback will not be released until 1 week after the quiz is due to minimize potential for academic dishonesty.
- You are free to work ahead on the daily blog posts if you have extra time and would like to complete the work earlier. However, please be aware that grading blog posts takes a substantial amount of time for me. Therefore, you can expect to have grades entered for your blog posts 1 week after they are due. If you do not see a grade entered for your posts past this deadline, please feel free to email me then.
This week's materials focuses primarily on exploring youth experiences of incarceration as well as the research on the role that early socialization and play experiences may have on future crime. Here are some questions to consider this week:
- What are your thoughts on the assertions made by researchers in the various materials about why youth ultimately become violent?
- For example, how large an impact do you think media exposure to violence impacts perceptions of youth?
- What about lived experiences of violence?
- How prevalent a problem do you think violence is for youth today?
- What are your thoughts on the role of early experiences such as play and play deprivation?
Keep these questions in mind as you consider the materials this week.
Tips for Blog Posts
This week marks the first of your substantive blogs posts on the course materials and content. Here are some tips I'd like to bring to your attention in order to help make sure students are able to earn the maximum amount of points for blog posts in the course.
- Be sure that you are addressing each of the criteria listed in the triangle, square, circle method. The triangle, square and circle points need to be very clearly identified and explained in your post. Be sure you're specifically discussing the point you agree with in the "square" portion of the triangle, square, circle method as well as discussing the course materials in terms of "circling" what you found to be problematic in the piece, if anything. The circle part of the blog post can also be a place where you bring up questions you have on the course materials you are discussing. Feel free to use labels for each of the points in the rubric in your post as if that is helpful for you.
- Creating a thorough, well-cited posts that draws examples from the materials directly will be one of the most helpful study guides you can have for the quizzes. For example, in your posts, I would highly suggest defining key terms and ideas within your posts. This will save you time while studying for the quizzes as you will be able to draw on your notes in your blogs.
- Make sure you are using examples from EACH of the course materials for the week. While I appreciate bringing in your own ideas, reflections, and experiences, it's important to ground your posts in the course materials as this is your chance to demonstrate your understanding of the readings and films.
- You must use proper APA or MLA citation in your posts. This includes having parenthetical citations AND end references. Please see the Start Here menu and check the
Citation Resources for APA (American Psychological Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association) Styles folder for tutorials.
I would encourage you to read your classmate's blogs for ideas about how to structure your posts as well.
I hope to chat with some of you during office hours today. See you in cyberspace!
